The Furniture Style Of Thomas Chippendale

Thomas Chippendale was born in 1718. Considered as a great adapter, he took the best ideas of his time and incorporated it into his own ideas and designs and gave the Master’s touch to the completed product. He was a carver of fine wood and his workshop produced some of the finest English furniture of its day. He wasn’t just a good carver and a cabinetmaker, he was a good businessman as well. He published a book of his furniture designs and had his wares advertised. His book became a best seller that doubled his customers in number. His name became a by-word and rich Englishmen sought for his work. They only wanted furniture produced by Chippendale’s workshop. Chippendale’s name became a valuable asset – he was the first English cabinetmaker who carried such value in his name like an artist on a great painting.

Chippendale’s book of furniture designs entitled “Gentleman and Cabinet Maker’s Director” became the english cabinetmaker’s bible. Most cabinetmakers during Chippendale’s time copied his works using his drawings as models for their own work because there was so much demand from customers for his designs so they had better supply what the customers demanded. That’s why most of the furniture we refer to today as Chippendale was not actually made by the Master himself nor coming from his workshop but rather made by other cabinetmakers who adapted his designs. Chippendale undertook a very wide range of different types of designs which makes it difficult to actually pin point the “Chippendale look” with great certainty.

Chippendale is considered the great adapter. Inspired by the styles of others, he adapted them in a special way that would meet the desires and needs of his vast clientele. Starting with the Early Georgian Period, Chippendale adapted them by simplifying their lines and lightening their looks. He gave more grace and charm to the design. Chippendale’s chair designs probably won him the greatest acclaim and it is for these classic designs that his name endures. Chippendale tried so many designs and was imitated by so many cabinet makers that it is very difficult to pin down a piece of furniture as being absolutely Chippendale.

The following are important clues to look for in the Chippendale style:

1. Rococo Motifs with open carved backs. The rococo style of Louis XV is one major influence in Chippendale designs. He took the French design of Louis XV and adapted it for a more English taste. Although more often it is only possible for a connoisseur to distinguish Chippendale’s English rococo from that of the French Rococo. One clue is that Chippendale chairs, for example featured carved mahogany backs while the French chairs have upholstered backs.

2. Chinese is the second major influence in the Chippendale designs. Some chairs would reflect an outline of a pagoda roof on its back rest. Others have fretwork on the chair back that is usually a direct copy of an elegant Chinese design of the period. As already known, Chippendale was widely imitated during his period and any piece that reflects the same motif can rightly be called Chinese Chippendale even if it doesn’t come from the Master’s workshop.

3. Gothic Influence. The use of Gothic motifs is the third major influence in the Chippendale design. The pointed arch that epitomizes the Gothic cathedral is the most familiar of these Gothic motifs.

4. Open Pediment. The curved open pediment top is one design motif that is usually attributed to Chippendale. This is often seen in the top of casepieces. Today we often refer to it as “Chippendale clock” since he often used this design in his tall grandfather’s clock. The open pediment design was not invented by Chippendale himself but rather a design that was already introduced during the Queen Anne period. Since Chippendale was the first to use it extensively, he has been firmly identified with that design motif.

The 3 Step Formula To Creating Your Bestseller Book

A lot of people asked me, “Do you know that all the books you’ve written have become bestsellers”? Did it happen by chance?” The answer is no.

In fact, what I’ve discovered is before I had written my books; I was always reading best-selling books. And as I read all those books, I asked myself this question “What did they all have in common?”

“Is there a formula for writing a best selling book?” I discovered there is, and I make sure that all my books follow that formula, and so far it has worked well for me.

The first step in this formula is that the book must have mass appeal. It must be something that almost everybody or a big chunk of the population needs and wants to know about.

Here are some examples of topics that appeal to the masses. Making money is one of them. Everyone wants to know how to make money. Success is another example; everybody wants to succeed in life. Health and personal wellness, everybody wants to watch their weight or be healthy. All these are topics which are bound to sell because everyone’s wants or needs them

You can write on and sell a number of books but you will never be a bestseller because it’s just not a mass appeal. And this is the essential and first step of the formula

The second step to the formula is the importance of a good title. There are books which have good content inside, but due to the title not being interesting or captivating enough, people do not buy them.

Your title is important. The best title to use is one that conveys a promise. Take for example “Master Your Mind, Design Your Destiny”. The word “Your” speaks to the audience. Another example is “I Am Gifted, So Are You”. These titles are good examples of titles conveying benefits and promises.

A good example to illustrate this is an advertisement. 80% of whether someone reads your ad depends on the headline.

As with the title, the same principle also applies to the book cover. People do judge a book by its cover. Your book cover has got to be designed in a very professional way. The biggest mistake that an author can make is to ignore the design of the book cover.

You must be willing to spend money to get someone to professionally design the book cover. It has to look professional so it looks international. This is the difference that makes the difference.

The third step to the formula is; this applies especially when you are writing a self-help book, there must be an inspirational story. It could be your own, or someone else’ but it has to be an inspirational story or a collection of stories.

Here are some examples of these stories.

Robert Kiyosaki – How he learned the ropes and secrets from his rich dad and became rich.

Tony Robbins – How he started out from being a janitor to becoming this multimillionaire.

So you have to find that rags to riches story because creates the human interest angle. It creates a face, a person to it. So again, if you are writing a book on relationships, you have to have a persona who has failed in all their relationships but has now has got a wonderful family.

The reason why my books have topped the bestselling charts is because I have applied the same steps that I have just shared with you in this article. You can do the same too. Use the same formula that I have shown you to create your very own bestselling book today!

Christopher Hitchens and Tony Jones 1 of 11, 06 October 2009 10:00

If there were any doubts about writer and general provocateur Christopher Hitchens ability to pull a crowd, they were entirely dispelled by the sold-out opening night of the first ever Festival of Dangerous Ideas. Presented by the Sydney Opera House and the St James Ethics Centre, the Festival brought together some of the more controversial thinkers from Australia and around the world. Hitchens’s keynote address, followed by a discussion with our own Tony Jones, was an expansion on his bestselling, “God is Not Great: Religion Poisons Everything”. Hitchens was at his polemical best, delivering a beautifully constructed speech supporting his argument that religion is not only completely implausible, but often actively destructive. Christopher Hitchens’s other books include “Letters to a Young Contrarian”, “Why Orwell Matters” and “The Missionary Position: Mother Theresa in Theory and Practice.” He also writes a regular column in “Vanity Fair”.

Body Shaping Exercise Secrets for Women

The secrets of effective body shaping for women must first start with a clear understanding of the term’s meaning. All too often the term is misused and confused with other fitness related phrases or activities. This is one of the untold reasons why so many women never achieve the body shaping results they desire and deserve.

Body shaping is not bodybuilding, power-lifting, or weight training. These forms of exercise are not for everybody – but body shaping can be, especially for women who are not satisfied with the shape of their body.

Too fat and flabby or too skinny and unshapely? A well structured body shaping exercise program can be the missing link between you and the sexy body you desire and deserve.

Body shaping is the wise use of certain principles of exercise, fitness and smart nutrition to manifest desired changes in the body. Much too often, the term is confused with other types of exercise programs that are not conducive to firming and shaping the female body, safely and efficiently.

There are several elements of body shaping, although not all elements apply to all women. Fat removal, cellulite reduction, skin tightening, feminine muscle shaping, inches lost, changes in body composition levels, shaping curvy thighs or a rounder butt, toning up the arms and shoulders, losing stomach flab – these can all fall under the heading of body shaping for women.

Two ladies with very different goals can follow the same type of fitness program while adhering to nutritional plans that are structured to be in line with their goals, and dependent on their starting points, with measurable progress and consistent success.

A woman who is sixty-three pounds over weight and wanting to lose body fat has the same ‘body’ (a human body) as a woman who is slightly under weight and wants to gain some muscle weight, through body shaping exercises, while improving her overall level of fitness. Although there may be differences in natural abilities of coordination or strength they can both do the same exercise routine. Differences in caloric intake and the quality of foods eaten will be the factor that brings each of these women closer to their individual body shaping goals.

Cardiovascular exercise may be slightly different. The woman who wants to lose body fat to achieve body shaping results, will devote a larger amount of time to cardiovascular exercise (25 – 40 minutes) as compared to the woman who wants to build up certain areas of her body to become more shapely(15 – 25 minutes).

Some body shaping programs try to combine the resistance exercise with cardiovascular exercise. While this is not easy, and most programs fall short of doing this successfully, it is possible – especially when the body shaping program uses body-weight exercise principles.

A body shaping program is not usually found in the gym setting. You either have individual programs of weight training and machine exercises or large group classes doing some form of aerobics with some basic body shaping moves. True body shaping takes advantage of gravity, body-weight and kinesiology to bring about changes in the female body through full body conditioning and targeted muscle shaping exercises and workouts. When these factors are combined properly, you can realistically expect to see definite results within three to four weeks – especially when a moderate amount of attention is payed to nutritional intake and daily calories.

The best body shaping programs should be portable – meaning you can do them anywhere and anytime. Leaving no room for the typical excuses of not sticking with ‘the program’ and allowing you to make continuous progress toward the body shaping goals you have defined for your self.

Emerging Trends In The Book Industry

First, let’s take a look at emerging trends in publishing:

The religious and inspirational book market is growing.

E-books are still accelerating and gaining acceptance, including digital textbooks and digital libraries. (In fact, when I took my children to register them for school, I was told their textbooks would be available online. Online textbooks lessen the amount of material the children have to carry home and negate the excuse, “I forgot my book.”)

Borders is now publishing books to be sold exclusively in Borders and Waldenbooks stores and is currently holding a writing contest for store employees.

Audio book sales are on the rise.

Graphic novels are selling well, with two surprises to me: there is an increase in nonfiction sales, and more women are buying. For more on graphic novels, see http://news.bookweb.org/news/5333.html.

An August 3, 2007 AAP report revealed these statistics for June:

Adult Hardcover sales were up 11.1%

Adult Paperback sales were up 0.3%

Adult Mass Market sales were down 4.6%

Children’s/YA Hardcover sales were up 22.2%

Children’s/YA Paperback sales were up 7.1%

Audio Book sales were up 25.9%

E-book sales were up 13.5%

Religious book sales were up 19.4%

(Percentages compared to the same time last year.)

The EBM (espresso book machine), a print on demand system which allows a buyer to present a credit card and have a requested book print in approximately the amount of time necessary to make a latte, may be coming to a store or library near you in the not-so-distant future.

As far as book marketing goes, there is talk of third-party advertising in books becoming more prominent.

Margaret Atwood’s invention, the LongPen, allowed authors to sign books for fans at BEA and The London International Book Fair (among other locations) without leaving home. See [http://www.longpen.com/lp-welcome.html] for more information on this new technology.

Non-traditional outlets are doing a brisk business as well. Mike’s Deli in the Bronx has sold more than 4,500 copies of Ann Volkwein’s Arthur Avenue Cookbook at $25 each. That’s something to think about when you’re preparing your book marketing plan.

Larger companies such as Amazon and Simon & Schuster are promoting authors with video and podcasts; and Harper Collins will be offering book excerpts via iPhone.

One thing I’ve been taking into consideration lately is how to keep readers interested while my book is awaiting publication. Fortunately for me, I found some “widgets” to, hopefully, help keep people interested in my Web page. I now have a “Stress Relief” page on my site containing a game, a slide show and an answering machine. It’s really fun. If you’d like to see it, check out [http://gayletrent.com/stressrelief.aspx].

If you aren’t getting “Publishers Lunch,” you can sign up for the free newsletter at http://www.publishersmarketplace.com/lunch/subscribe.html. Publishers Lunch is a short version of Publishers Marketplace’s daily news. On Tuesdays, they send out “Deal Lunch” which is about 25% of the book deals reported the previous week. It’s a good way to keep abreast of what books are selling.

10 Things to Do Before I Die

Although I am now finishing up my seventh decade of a most exciting and fulfilling life, I am planning for the future, as I do every January. I take this exciting trip of the mind, soul, and body (in spite of two malignancies and a pair of knee prostheses) in the spirit of George Bernard Shaw who said:

“When I die, I want to be all used up.”

My list looks like this, complete with some sort of rationale for each, and in parentheses my best guess for the probability of their successful completion:

1) Summit Mt. Aconcagua: I reached 21,600 ft. in 1996 and 21,700 ft. in 2002. Unfortunately, as the highest peak outside of Asia, the peak is at 22,800 ft (6,962 meters). My wife, Elaine, notes that if I get an additional 100 ft. every 6 years, I will summit at the age of 135! (5%)

2) Summit Mt. Cotopaxi: I have never been to Ecuador, which is reason enough to go, but at 19,347 ft. (5,897 meters) the summit might be attainable in spite of my maturity (age) and low testosterone (effects of therapy for prostate cancer). (35%)

3) Swim with the snow monkeys in Japan: This probably illegal, dangerous, and foolish, but every time I see their photos, as a Scorpio (life being focused on water, fire, and sex…not necessarily in that order) I am lured, at least re: the water part.(35%)

4) Take the Trans-Siberian Railway trip: Since I have been to Russia, climbed Mt. Elbrus in the Caucasus Mountains, at 18,510 ft. (5642 meters) the highest mountain in Europe, and have spent a month in China, it is time to link the two. (75%)

5) Write a NY Times #1 Bestseller: I have written five books, including Optimize Your Life! which is an international best-seller (the Chinese publisher’s edition was on the Book-of-the-Month Club). For motivation, I have pasted the book title and my name over the #1 slot of a copy of the NY Times best-seller list, and I “visualize” it every day as I brush my teeth. (wow! and priceless!)

6) Keynote fee of $10,000: One of my great mentors, the late Dottie Walters, said that I was a “$10,000 keynote.” I’m working at it, Dottie! (50%)

7) Closer relationship with, my wife, Elaine: After my “near-death” and rescue on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire I realized that the Elaine would have been the real victim, if I had died or become permanently disabled. (100%)

8) Enjoy my/our new sexuality: What age fails to do to undermine one’s sexuality, anti-hormone therapy, radical surgery, chemotherapy, and external beam radiation will. However, as a result of trips to India and Nepal, we have learned (and mastered to some degree) Tantric sex, etc. Scorpio lives. All we need is the fire, which we have in a fire pit in our Zen garden. (100%)

9) Tune up my body/mind/soul: As I now struggle to complete my book, What Better Place to Die, based on my Mt. Washington misadventure, I am keeping a “promise” I made while I was on that mountain. (100%)

10) Finish the other five “promises” I made Mt. Washington: to be insensitive to negative criticism, to get rid of non-productive real estate, to make amends with some key people, and to better network with key people from my past… write the book. (100%)

That’s my list. What is on your list…and why?

Since childhood, my value system has been basically Judeo-Christian, although I have become quite eclectic over the years. As a Buddhist, should I “stop striving? As a Hindu should I graciously enter the fourth phase of life and “become a sannyasin, a wandering hermit, seeking only spiritual enlightenment?” Psychologist Abraham Maslow in Hierarchy of Needs described the ultimate phase of one’s life as self-actualization, that is, going beyond the basics of life and finding one’s single “calling” and heeding it. Single calling… how about ten?

In Worth Magazine in 1999, Edward Sussman wrote an article, “24 Things to Do before You Die” which focused mostly on interviews with celebrities. Grand Dame, Brooke Astor advised one to “be gracious to someone you despise.” CNN economics guru Lou Dobbs suggested that you “thank someone instrumental in your success,” while author George Plimpton advised us all to “go on a quest.”

You may not be able to run away with the circus at this stage in your life, but you can sneak off for a window of time, time well chosen and spent, time that will expand your horizons, time in which to create powerful memories.

Enjoy the journey! Do it now!
